The Kensington Land Trust was incorporated in April, 1992 as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization whose mission is to preserve the historic garden character of the Town. The National Trust for Historic Preservation provided a grant to the Kensington Historical Society to help launch an organization committed to helping preserve the integrity of the town’s historical fabric. Our land trust resulted from that grant.
Our purpose is to serve as a community resource for preservation of Kensington's Victorian-era garden setting and for land conservation, which also results in conservation of precious natural resources. We provide information and assistance to property owners seeking the best way to preserve and protect their side yard lots from development, with a particular focus on the town's historic district. Many property owners don’t realize that there may be tax benefits in choosing to not develop a side yard with a separate residence, with the added significant benefit to the community of helping to preserve the green space that characterizes the unique park setting we all share and enjoy. This can be achieved primarily through the donation of a conservation easement and/or historic preservation easement, but the best mechanism may vary according to the circumstances. Additionally, the property owner can continue to enjoy the beauty of their home's natural surroundings as well as the satisfaction of knowing that their property will remain perpetually in its historic, natural setting.
